Welcome to the Family Council Canvas

Clarity for Families. Directions for Advisors.

A collaborative tool that helps families and their advisors align around values, goals, and strategies.

Because a lasting legacy requires purpose, trust, and shared direction.

“Families needed more than financial advice. They needed help building trust, strengthening communication, aligning values, and defining long-term purpose. Without this alignment, advisors can’t deliver truly meaningful guidance, and families risk losing their legacy.”

Nicholas Schwarz, Founder and CEO of The Cecily Group

A Tool Grounded in Experience and Research

The Family Council Canvas was developed by Nicholas Schwarz, Founder and CEO of The Cecily Group. With over two decades of experience advising high-net-worth families across borders, Nicholas saw a recurring challenge: the technical side of wealth management was well covered, but the human side was often overlooked.

To address this, Nicholas pursued doctoral research at Bocconi University, studying the mechanisms that create long-term purpose and how this strengthens the quality of advisory relationships.

The Family Council Canvas is the result: a structured framework for the conversations that matter most. It helps families and advisors move forward with clarity, alignment, and a shared sense of purpose.

Common Questions About The Family Council Canvas

Families typically begin with an introductory consultation to discuss their goals, governance questions, and current challenges. From there, the process can include Family Council sessions, governance mapping, strategic workshops, and ongoing advisor support.

Yes. The framework is designed to support different ownership structures, cultures, family sizes, and stages of wealth development. The process adapts to the family’s unique goals, governance maturity, and long-term vision.

As families grow across generations, informal communication often becomes insufficient. A Family Council provides structure for discussions around ownership, governance, education, succession, and shared goals, helping families remain aligned over time.

It is both a framework and a collaborative system. The Canvas combines structured governance methodology with digital tools and advisor-supported discussions designed to help families organise long-term strategy and communication.

The Family Council Cards are conversation tools used by family members to explore values, priorities, and areas of agreement or tension. Insights from those sessions can then be integrated into the Family Council Canvas as part of the broader governance process.

Advisors use the Canvas to guide conversations, map family priorities, organise governance discussions, and align technical advice with the family’s broader goals and values. It helps advisors move beyond purely financial conversations into long-term strategic alignment.

The framework supports more productive conversations by making priorities, expectations, and governance questions visible in one place. While it is not a mediation tool on its own, it can help families surface hidden tensions and create more structured dialogue around difficult topics

The Canvas creates space for structured discussions around leadership, ownership, participation, and long-term family goals before succession becomes urgent. It helps families clarify expectations and reduce the risk of unresolved tensions resurfacing during transitions.

Traditional financial planning often focuses mainly on assets and investment performance. The Family Council Canvas also addresses communication, family dynamics, shared vision, governance structures, and long-term continuity.

The Four Abundances are the foundation of the Family Council Canvas framework: Wealth, Relationships, Time and Purpose.

The framework treats these four areas as interconnected forms of family capital that need ongoing attention across generations.

The Canvas helps families navigate common governance challenges such as succession planning, fragmented communication, unclear decision-making, differing expectations across generations, and the difficulty of balancing financial goals with family relationships and long-term purpose.

The Canvas was created for wealthy families, family offices, family councils, and advisors working with multigenerational wealth. It supports both families building governance structures for the first time and more established family enterprises seeking clearer alignment.

The Family Council Canvas is a collaborative governance tool developed by The Cecily Group to help families and their advisors align around values, long-term goals, and decision-making structures. It brings together conversations around wealth, relationships, time, and purpose into one shared strategic framework.
